Through sculpture, installation, and performance, Kelly Wu funnels interpretations of her memories and upbringing into obtained objects and personal archival material. Focusing primarily on heritage, gender, and class discourses, Wu is almost inexplicit with her autobiography, doling out initially secretive yet pointed political messages under the guise of ordinary forms. Accompanying texts and drole word-of-mouth storytelling tactics are used frequently as a tool to convey, helping to unravel the various factions of Wu’s memory and psyche at large.
Wu was born in Essex to two immigrant parents from Beijing, China. Although her parents are unartistic themselves, the intercultural lives that they have led inspires much of her present-day work. Her practice continues to draw from her working-class Chinese-British background and her lived experience as a queer woman of the global majority. Wu currently studies at Central Saint Martins and was represented by Galerie Bulatov in 2023. She has shown extensively across London and Paris.
